Mousin' aroun' with Neasden Postlethwaite
Oddly enough, the internet is filled with periodic tables of beer. It must be a growth industry, carefully hidden under the cat macros, pr0n, Top Gear torrents, Top Gear slash and loud, confident and wrong Linux weblogs.

Why isn't there an electric Caterham/Lotus Seven/Westfield? (In the motor-at-each-corner and exotic battery style, rather than lead-acid and milkfloat motor one.)

Thanks GWB...
Gaps found in young people's sex knowledge
(CNN) -- Most sexually active unmarried young adults believe pregnancy should be planned, but about half do not use contraception regularly, according to a study published Tuesday.
The survey of 1,800 people age 18 to 29 was conducted by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.
"What is surprising is just how wide the gap is between single young adults' intentions and behavior on this very important issue," said Bill Albert, chief program officer at the organization.
I'm pretty sure (despite the assertions made by some of the commenters) we can pin this pretty securely to abstinence-only education. At 12 or so, in my West LA junior high health class, we learned just about all we needed to know about sex, contraception, and drugs. (Administration felt we'd be pretty safe with the rock n roll we learned on the playground, given that they let a very nice lesbian teach us The Hustle in phys ed.) What I learned in that one class served me pretty well, though even that knowledge (plus all I learned in bio classes and from the AIDS crisis) didn't prevent a condom breaking and the need for an abortion. (I know there are a few anti-abortion folks on this list - at 23 neither of us was ready willing or able, and I still regret how hard I pushed and how I didn't see a way around my own dogma on the matter. Nonetheless, it was the right decision at the time.)

Who says you don't learn anything from TV?
Back in the dim and distant past when I was a student at Leeds University, there was a persistent rumour that the Henry Price Building (student residence where my then-boyfriend lived) was built on the model of a Swedish prison.

This week's episode of Swedish Wallander has the detective visiting a Swedish prison.

The rumour is totally true. Only the Swedish prison used a lighter, more cheerful shade of wood.

Rarely have I had such a sense of "hey, I've been there" when I clearly haven't.

Big Finish Xmas Podcast Day One - news
I thought that I'd share the news that Big Finish are doing another Jago and Litefoot Companion Chronicle, a sequel to 'The Mahogany Murders' - which Nick Briggs stated was owing to the popularity of the first CC.

There was also a tiny mention of a Charley Pollard Companion Chronicle as well.

You can listen to the Podcast here, and there will another one each day this week.

And to encourage you to listen (should you need more encouragement!), there will be a daily competition during the podcast.

A grand day out
From 091211_theeyestheeyes

Well, that was fun. A bit of last-minute tinkering on Saturday morning got the eye running nicely, then we abandoned it on the Arnolfini's reception desk to stare at passers-by.

Construction notes (currently rather sketchy) and source code are here, if you're interested:

Not Sunday.
Today was fun, showing off the eye thing and generally having a natter, but I think one day was enough, so I won't be there tomorrow.

Distributed Ruby

A colleague of mine, Brian Candler, showed me the sheer power of Distributed Ruby (DRb) this week.

Wow. I am impressed – marshaling objects between separate processes, automatically executing actions on the right process – I like it.

For those of you in the Bristol area
I'm helping with a little Dorkbot thing at Uncraftivism in the Arnolfini tomorrow. Plans are a little on the vague side, but I expect we'll fetch up at 11ish and be there on-and-off for much of the day (and Sunday too).

If you're in the vicinity, come and say hello.

No Avatar review today?
Apparently, reviews are "embargoed" until December 14th - which means, in almost worst-case timing, we have to wait a week to get the opinion of Kermode on this film (which I'm assuming he's seen - perhaps he hasn't yet?)

Although a couple of places have leaked out that they think it's good, they're saying so in very restrained terms.

Perhaps someone could put together a dictionary so that the review can be conducted in code?

I'll be listening for "The monkey is up the lamp-post", that would mean it's a good film if I'm reading the code-book right.

Art Question
I'm certain that a few of the folks reading this have studied art history.

There's a kind of painting that was done during (I think) the Renaissance in which one sees a huge interior of a church-like structure in which many other paintings are on display, often leaning against pillars, or on easels.

It might be that only one artist did a few of these and I happen to have come across them, or it may be that many artists used these as a kind of CV - look! I can do stained glass, linear perspective, still lifes and portraits - and fine crucifictions, too.

So, what are these called? And lacking that, can you direct me to one of these online (as the poem doesn't want to wait for my next visit to Paris)?

Dewey Dewey Dewey
No, not the kid from Malcolm in the Middle...

(Courtesy of Garrison Keillor)

It's the birthday of Melvil Dewey, born in Adams Center, New York (1851). He went to Amherst, and to support himself there he worked in the college library, and he decided that it needed to be reorganized. At the time, there was no consistent method that libraries used to organize books. Some numbered shelves, some arranged books by size just to look nice, and some libraries tried to alphabetize the whole library, which meant that every time they got a new book they had to redo the entire system. Dewey saw a better way to do this, but for awhile, he couldn't decide whether to be a missionary or to put his time into reorganizing the library system. But he chose the latter, and he started to figure out a system of categories and subcategories, based on older ideas. As he researched, he wrote in his diary, "My heart is open to anything that's either decimal or about libraries."

And he came up with the Dewey Decimal System, which is still used today in many libraries, a series of classifications divided and subdivided into subjects and assigned a decimal number to each book.

Short Trips: Available for a Short Time Only
Big Finish have posted an announcement on their website that after the end of this year, not only will their license to produce Short Trips books have expired, so will their right to sell them. So there's only limited time left to buy these books directly from Big Finish.

The books are going at quite a bargain price right now, though not quite enough of a bargain for me to buy all the ones I haven't got yet. So I'll have to decide which ones I want...
